TRIGGERS!

(Warning: Picture may cause an emotional reaction).

Have you ever had a moment where you are in a great mood until you encounter something or someone that makes you react emotionally?

Perhaps this thing, event, experience, or person reminds you of an event that happened in the past but now makes you feel irrationally upset?

What you’re experiencing there are emotional triggers.

Emotional triggers can either be helpful or hurtful. It is personal and it comes and is felt in different reactionary levels.

Healthy emotional triggers are outward memory acquisitions that somehow influence our point of reference e.g., during conception or gestation, our mum was eating more garlicky food, this has been passed to us that which influence our preference to savory food later on.

Experiencing emotional triggers from time to time is fine and healthy as it gives you a better understanding of yourself and of others. However, when these unexplained reactions become intense, extreme, and constant that which it becomes an intrusion into your day to day life, here are some steps that you may want to try:

1. Find a safe and personal space

2. Tell people where you are and that you need your space

3. Stay present and be calm

4. Sit down with back straight up

5. Breathe in and breathe out, repeat for 3x

6. Close your eyes

7. Place your attention on your breathing

8. Stay still for minimum of 7 minutes

9. Open your eyes

10. Carry on with your day.

So tell me, what triggers you?

What’s your driver?

What causes you to flip?

Because knowing your triggers can make a massive difference in staying in control and keeping you mentally well.

Were you often triggered by objects or events that cause you anxiety?

Were you often feeling out of control where yelling and aggressive behavior becomes an easy release?

😶‍🌫️ Have you been deliberately avoiding situations that may remind you of an unwanted event in the past?

Have you been experiencing intrusive dreams that keep you from sleeping especially at night?

Does a roller coaster ride best describe your daily emotions?

If you happen to answer “YES” to one of those questions above, then, congratulations! It means that you have been aware of what’s going inside you.

If you are unsure because you might have thought that what you’re experiencing is “NORMAL”, then start observing yourself.

If you‘re not affected by anything and answered “NO”, well and good. However, I would recommend checking if you’re totally blissful or avoidant?
